Case study / B2B Display · Creative Testing

One word can move
the needle.

Digital marketing spends its energy on platforms, bidding and attribution, while what ads actually say has become an afterthought. We tested that assumption for Informa's Vitafoods Insights: four creative pairs, one word changed per pair, nothing else.

Background

Applied psychology,
on a banner ad.

REBEL manages paid media for Vitafoods Insights, one of Informa Markets' flagship nutraceutical newsletter brands. Campaigns run across Google Display targeting professionals in EMEA, the USA and APAC, with content engagement and newsletter sign-ups as the primary objectives.

The Vitafoods Europe Trend Guide is a key annual content asset and a recurring paid campaign, which makes it the perfect vehicle for structured creative testing: the brief is consistent, the audience is established and performance benchmarks already exist.

The challenge

Does one word matter
in B2B display?

The psychological mechanics of language are documented, replicable effects: verbs encode agency, specificity signals relevance, framing shapes perceived value. The published research is decades deep. The question is not whether these effects exist, it is whether advertisers are paying attention.

We designed a test to find out whether they hold for a B2B nutraceutical audience across three regions: identical images, identical CTAs, and only the headline verb or phrase changed.

Four pairs. One word
changed per pair.

A structured A/B test across four creative sets, running from 27 May to 5 June 2026 across EMEA, the USA and APAC. For each pair the hero image and CTA were held constant, so any performance gap is attributable to the words alone.

One variable only

Same image, same CTA, same audience. Only the key word or phrase in the headline changed, so the result means something.

Grounded in research

Verb agency, linguistic concreteness and value framing from published psychology, tested in-market rather than assumed.

Read by region

EMEA, USA and APAC measured separately, because language cues do not land identically everywhere.

One verb,
measured.

+83%
CTR lift from Unlock over Access: 7.70% vs 4.21%
9.19%
Explore, the best combined CTR in the entire dataset
+26%
The 2026 edition over the latest edition: 9.00% vs 7.13%
Key takeaways

What the language
research got right.

Impression distribution between versions was algorithm-driven and uneven for some creatives, so CTRs are most meaningful at the individual creative level. The pattern across the test, though, is exactly what the research predicts.

Verbs implying protected or hidden value beat transactional equivalents: Unlock vs Access was the clearest signal in the dataset
Open-ended exploration beats singular discovery for multi-topic content: Explore beat Discover for a guide spanning cognitive nutrition, AI and GLP-1
Temporal specificity beats generic recency: the 2026 edition outperformed the latest edition
The USA read differently from EMEA in two of four creatives, so regional testing matters
